I. Course Overview
The ELL Curriculum at Burlington High School follows modern American mainstream ESL/ ELD methodology and pedagogy. The ELL course over the entire school year comprises of structured units and lessons of powerful, relevant and purposeful curriculum and assessment. The units and lessons in this course are designed to help students strengthen and improve their English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
The Longman Press Side by Side series of four levels of student books, workbooks, audio tapes, teacher’s guides and other texts serve as the basis for teaching grammar and vocabulary development. These texts also help to reveal the complexities of modern American conversation and language.
II. Successful Learning
English Language Learners will improve their language skills, knowledge and abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening through authentic and challenging learning opportunities. Differentiation, scaffolding and curricular design for leveled classes allows for students to learn and improve their skills according to each individual’s language proficiency level.
Participation, good effort, completed homework and class work as well as completed unit projects, will ensure student achievement for this course.
III. Student Learning Expectations
Students can expect powerful, relevant and purposeful language learning opportunities that will challenge them and allow them to have greater success in all other classes.
Students can expect regular practice with academic and essential vocabulary that will give English Language Learners greater access to the general curriculum at Burlington High School.
IV. Expected Outcomes
By the completion of the course, successful English Language Learners will be able to enjoy more confidence and greater fluency while reading, writing, speaking and listening in English.
By the completion of the course, students will be able to understand more and perform at higher levels in all other high school courses.
V. Topics/ Content
In this course, language skills are of the utmost importance. Knowledge gained will be the increased vocabulary related to the content in the units and lessons this year; as well as new knowledge in grammar, written conventions, reading comprehension and academic content.
In this course, some of the content is relevant to real life situations, such as: finding a job; describing people, places and things; getting around town; buying food; shopping for clothes; expressing past, present and future events; and describing plans and intentions.
Other topics include: expressing time, duration and opinions; describing accomplishments; reporting household repair problems; reassuring someone; describing actions that have occurred and actions that haven’t yet occurred; career advancement; asking for and giving advice; medical symptoms and problems, as well as many other topics.
VI. Assessing Progress
In this course, we will have quizzes, exams, essays, projects, presentations, discussions and nightly homework. Students will be assessed by Mr. Chiocca and sometimes students will self-assess their own work. It is important to note that assessments will be done not only with reading and writing, but also with the skills of listening and speaking.
Our weekly vocabulary will give students greater access to the words that will be used in all other academic classes. There will be weekly quizzes, usually given on Fridays.
There are standard grades for this course, just like every other class, and in addition, ELL progress reports will be sent home at the end of each quarter.
