The Edu Blogosphere (April 12, 2011)

Howdy,

After my last blog post, I was feeling like a blogger with no readers.

How sad..., yes, I know.

A dear friend and colleague commented that I must continue to blog. If I may embelish his comments, it was like he was saying - "Yes, Mr. Chiocca." "Please blog - we need your insight, your wisdom, your guidance."

Cue the giggles. Yes, I want you to laugh a little.

Ok, so I realize that my blog may only get a few readers from time to time, but let me share an honest hope and goal. For some reason, I would like to build a blog that may hopefully someday be a leader in ESL dialogue, a trailblazer if you will! So, might you, my dear reader be willing to stick around and visit us from time to time. I sure would appreciate your loyal reading and patronage. Ok, well, I'm not selling anything, but you get the point.

Cheers,
Mr. Chiocca

  1. Having a "Bueller...Bueller..." moment? There ARE readers out there! Even if some of us take a while to get through our Google Reader backlog... (OK, maybe more than a while.) Keep blogging, if only to help you reflect on your practice. Chances are, there are others out there thinking the same thing.

I'm happy to say that this year was my best yet. Combined with having more time to plan and prep for great units and lessons (now being post-Master's time), and with all the new knowledge and skills I learned from my M.A.T., it was a great year! You know... having those 4 years of teaching experience before doing my M.A.T., also, I think, really helped me to grow as an educator. We did some really exciting units this year. For example, building on some lessons I found in some Adult-ESL texts, I created a 3-week unit titled "Helping Your Family to Buy a Home!" Yes - so, we made "dream homes" out of cardboard boxes and materials. Students learned "Mr. Chiocca's 11 Steps to Buying a Home," and they made YouTube videos and Audio Recordings for the Final Project. The kids learned about mortgages, down payments, PITI - Principal, Interest, Taxes and Insurance; and how to work with real estate agents and brokers. In addition, students learned ...

Doesn't a blog only make sense when others will read it?

Hi, Is anyone reading this...? Really...? (crickets...) You see... I don't mean to sound so lame, but I'm torn. I feel like I'm supposed to contribute to the educational blogosphere, and yet I have three followers. Please... cue giggle (Yes, I want you to smile and giggle). I had these ideal thoughts about what it may be like to blog and learn from others online, and yet - I feel quite unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Yes, there must be 2 billion blogs out there, and everyone is pretty busy with life, so should I continue to blog? Please - somebody leave a comment...! And say, Yes, Mr. Chiocca, please contribute. Education and the future of public education depends on people like you, who care and want our kids to learn as much as they can in each grade level. Thanks for reading! Mr. Chiocca

My first clubhouse room!

I'm officially a moderator on Clubhouse! Yay! Have you gotten on the app?  It's still new, and in development, so it's only available on Apple iPhones, and iPads, etc.  It's still "invite only" and they did this on purpose, but I don't think it was meant to be exclusive, like a private club, rather because they are still in the "Beta" phase of growing, and developing, and didn't want to have millions join too fast, and thus overload the system.  Once you're on it, they you realize the value of it.  It's cool how the conversations in these "rooms" are generally based around a specific niche idea/ industry/ topic/ question.  There are rooms with thousands of listeners, and then there are smaller rooms which allow you to make new friends, and to be "brought up onto the stage," to speak.  It's audio only, and only Twitter and Instagram are linked in your profile, so it seems pretty clean and neat.  I like how there...
