My Personal Philosophy on Education_June 2013

Today, I want to articulate and share my personal philosophy on the role and purpose of education.  I am sharing this with you today, because I was inspired today by Dr. Geoffrey Canada, via TED Talks.  Sometimes many words can tell a good story or express the message one wants to get across, but for this post today, I think I would like to keep it short and sweet.  Since I’m a teacher of English Language Learners, I first want to point out that I have already used 3 common American expressions so far in this post!  Can you find them?  Good for you, if you were able to find them, and some could argue there’s a 4th, but I just want to share these three expressions:  (1) “to get across;” (2) “short and sweet;” and (3) “point out.”  Well done!

I believe that each and every child should have the right to a free and fair public education, from Pre-K – 12, with quality instruction, engaging curriculum, appropriate guidance, safe schools, free or reduced breakfast and lunch (when applicable), and qualified teachers.  In short, I believe if kids could really say what they wanted, it would be this: “Protect me, care for me, and show me the world.”  I cannot act as if those last words were my own, and so must give credit to a dear mentor, Mr. Frank Lillo (retired Principal, MA).  Furthermore, I would like to add that I know many schools are not succeeding, and so I will stand and say that something has to change.  What exactly?  Let me let Dr. Geoffrey Canada share now, on how we need innovation in our schools.  Thank you.

I'm happy to say that this year was my best yet. Combined with having more time to plan and prep for great units and lessons (now being post-Master's time), and with all the new knowledge and skills I learned from my M.A.T., it was a great year! You know... having those 4 years of teaching experience before doing my M.A.T., also, I think, really helped me to grow as an educator. We did some really exciting units this year. For example, building on some lessons I found in some Adult-ESL texts, I created a 3-week unit titled "Helping Your Family to Buy a Home!" Yes - so, we made "dream homes" out of cardboard boxes and materials. Students learned "Mr. Chiocca's 11 Steps to Buying a Home," and they made YouTube videos and Audio Recordings for the Final Project. The kids learned about mortgages, down payments, PITI - Principal, Interest, Taxes and Insurance; and how to work with real estate agents and brokers. In addition, students learned ...

Doesn't a blog only make sense when others will read it?

Hi, Is anyone reading this...? Really...? (crickets...) You see... I don't mean to sound so lame, but I'm torn. I feel like I'm supposed to contribute to the educational blogosphere, and yet I have three followers. Please... cue giggle (Yes, I want you to smile and giggle). I had these ideal thoughts about what it may be like to blog and learn from others online, and yet - I feel quite unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Yes, there must be 2 billion blogs out there, and everyone is pretty busy with life, so should I continue to blog? Please - somebody leave a comment...! And say, Yes, Mr. Chiocca, please contribute. Education and the future of public education depends on people like you, who care and want our kids to learn as much as they can in each grade level. Thanks for reading! Mr. Chiocca

My first clubhouse room!

I'm officially a moderator on Clubhouse! Yay! Have you gotten on the app?  It's still new, and in development, so it's only available on Apple iPhones, and iPads, etc.  It's still "invite only" and they did this on purpose, but I don't think it was meant to be exclusive, like a private club, rather because they are still in the "Beta" phase of growing, and developing, and didn't want to have millions join too fast, and thus overload the system.  Once you're on it, they you realize the value of it.  It's cool how the conversations in these "rooms" are generally based around a specific niche idea/ industry/ topic/ question.  There are rooms with thousands of listeners, and then there are smaller rooms which allow you to make new friends, and to be "brought up onto the stage," to speak.  It's audio only, and only Twitter and Instagram are linked in your profile, so it seems pretty clean and neat.  I like how there...
