Summer thoughts_July 2013

Greetings Parents, Families:

Busy summer…? Perhaps for some of you... I know that others, like myself, are trying to enjoy some “R & R” … which stands for “rest and relaxation.” Since I pour 100% into my teaching during the school year, I must admit that I try my best to “recharge my batteries” during each vacation.

I will however, share that I make my children, ages 9 and 7, do some reading and learning activities each day. Yes, I require that my kids do: at least 10-15 minutes of age-appropriate/ skill-level appropriate reading (out loud, so I can help with decoding and pronunciation); some math (like flash cards, to reinforce those basic skills); and our daily music practice (piano lesson practice time). I encourage you to insist that your child continues to improve their academic skills and increase their knowledge in ways that you think might help them in the upcoming school year!

Finally, let me also suggest day trips to expose your child to places that can enrich their life experiences and aid in their maturation process. I suggest aquariums, museums, libraries, parks, beaches, rivers, lakes, historical sites, cities and towns, festivals, shows, concerts, camps, fairgrounds (aka fairs), university and college campuses, farmers’ markets, athletic events, fried seafood shacks and restaurants, old-fashioned car shows (aka cruise-ins), and amusement and theme parks!

Massachusetts has a lot to offer, especially in the summer. The beaches are wonderful, and since this blog is mostly meant for the parents and families of my ELLs, in Burlington, Mass., let me suggest some beaches nearby. Some of the most popular are: Salisbury Beach, Newbury Beach, Salisbury State Beach Reservation, Crane Beach, Plum Island, and Hampton Beach (Hampton, NH), which is just over the Massachusetts border. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer!

Signing off: "Mista Chocka"

I'm happy to say that this year was my best yet. Combined with having more time to plan and prep for great units and lessons (now being post-Master's time), and with all the new knowledge and skills I learned from my M.A.T., it was a great year! You know... having those 4 years of teaching experience before doing my M.A.T., also, I think, really helped me to grow as an educator. We did some really exciting units this year. For example, building on some lessons I found in some Adult-ESL texts, I created a 3-week unit titled "Helping Your Family to Buy a Home!" Yes - so, we made "dream homes" out of cardboard boxes and materials. Students learned "Mr. Chiocca's 11 Steps to Buying a Home," and they made YouTube videos and Audio Recordings for the Final Project. The kids learned about mortgages, down payments, PITI - Principal, Interest, Taxes and Insurance; and how to work with real estate agents and brokers. In addition, students learned ...

Doesn't a blog only make sense when others will read it?

Hi, Is anyone reading this...? Really...? (crickets...) You see... I don't mean to sound so lame, but I'm torn. I feel like I'm supposed to contribute to the educational blogosphere, and yet I have three followers. Please... cue giggle (Yes, I want you to smile and giggle). I had these ideal thoughts about what it may be like to blog and learn from others online, and yet - I feel quite unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Yes, there must be 2 billion blogs out there, and everyone is pretty busy with life, so should I continue to blog? Please - somebody leave a comment...! And say, Yes, Mr. Chiocca, please contribute. Education and the future of public education depends on people like you, who care and want our kids to learn as much as they can in each grade level. Thanks for reading! Mr. Chiocca

My first clubhouse room!

I'm officially a moderator on Clubhouse! Yay! Have you gotten on the app?  It's still new, and in development, so it's only available on Apple iPhones, and iPads, etc.  It's still "invite only" and they did this on purpose, but I don't think it was meant to be exclusive, like a private club, rather because they are still in the "Beta" phase of growing, and developing, and didn't want to have millions join too fast, and thus overload the system.  Once you're on it, they you realize the value of it.  It's cool how the conversations in these "rooms" are generally based around a specific niche idea/ industry/ topic/ question.  There are rooms with thousands of listeners, and then there are smaller rooms which allow you to make new friends, and to be "brought up onto the stage," to speak.  It's audio only, and only Twitter and Instagram are linked in your profile, so it seems pretty clean and neat.  I like how there...
