Hank Aaron! Last week, we lost a great man, and one of the greatest baseball players of all time. I just read through all of his stats and accomplishments. Wow! 23 seasons in the #mlb ..!! He played 21 seasons w/ the Milwaukee/ #atlantabraves and 2 seasons w/ the #milwaukeebrewers .. and he was predominantly a right fielder. He was an all-star 25 times, a #worldserieschamp in 1957, was a Nat'l League MVP, .. 3x a Golden Glove Award, 4x the NL home run leader, 755 #careerhomeruns (breaking #baberuth 's record, and... #hankaaron 's #homerun record lasted for 33 years! In one picture I show here, you can see when he broke the record, at home run number 715! There were many other records, stats, and awards, such as being inducted into the Nat'l Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982. He was from #mobilealabama and played #baseball briefly in the #NegroAmericanLeague. Beyond what I'm reading online, I can share my own personal memories of learning about him. I learned that he handled it all with grace, poise and character. By "handled it all," I'm referring to how even though many loved him, and so many were big fans of Hank Aaron, there were also hundreds who yelled the n-word ( #nword ). It is something we must acknowledge; the #racism in America during those years. He was strong, proud and brave to keep going through it all, and to triumph in the face of that. I salute you today, Mr. Henry "Hank" Aaron. God rest your soul. Thank you for paving the way, and for being strong, courageous and good. [a tribute to Hank Aaron/ book tour post today, day 31, 1/31/21] ~
I'm happy to say that this year was my best yet. Combined with having more time to plan and prep for great units and lessons (now being post-Master's time), and with all the new knowledge and skills I learned from my M.A.T., it was a great year! You know... having those 4 years of teaching experience before doing my M.A.T., also, I think, really helped me to grow as an educator. We did some really exciting units this year. For example, building on some lessons I found in some Adult-ESL texts, I created a 3-week unit titled "Helping Your Family to Buy a Home!" Yes - so, we made "dream homes" out of cardboard boxes and materials. Students learned "Mr. Chiocca's 11 Steps to Buying a Home," and they made YouTube videos and Audio Recordings for the Final Project. The kids learned about mortgages, down payments, PITI - Principal, Interest, Taxes and Insurance; and how to work with real estate agents and brokers. In addition, students learned ...
