Stamped! You've got to read this .. it's great. [Adam's unconventional book tour daily blog posts, '21]

Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You is a fantastic read!  I just finished it, and I give it two thumbs up!  Hello: I'm Adam Chiocca, a high school teacher, just outside Boston, Mass.  Should you listen to me?  Yes.  Am I an expert in African American history?  No, but I've been a student of African American history for over 25 years, and I'm now ready to launch the next phase of my life.  Yes, see..., I've got my 2nd book coming out soon.  Have I written about African American history?  Well, a little, but mostly I share my vision for what I'm building, and I share a bit of my journey, such as what I needed to learn as a white man, in order to become anti-racist.  Yes, I needed to become more aware of those tendencies that many white people have.  I'm not saying all white people are racist, for many will claim they're not, but if you truly want to be anti-racist, then you've got to drop the ego, and be willing to take an honest look at your own psychology, which may include old ways of thinking.  It's not helpful to just deny it.  It's critical to acknowledge that we all may have some things we need to address, which we perhaps learned unconsciously when we were just 9 or 10 years old.  Let me now share one of my chapters: Chapter 17, We Need Criminal Justice Reform. Yes, we do, and yes, I'm willing to try and change some white peoples' minds. It's not hard to start to realize old ways of thinking. The first steps are to become self-aware of one's own thinking, and then to be reflective, and thoughtful. I'm so grateful to #avaduvernay for her film, #13th / #thirteenth and to #jasonreynolds for writing #stamped .. this fantastic re-mix of the original #stampedfromthebeginning by #ibramkendi .. yes, so good. Thank you, Adam Chiocca [unconventional book tour post, day 12, 1/12/21]

I'm happy to say that this year was my best yet. Combined with having more time to plan and prep for great units and lessons (now being post-Master's time), and with all the new knowledge and skills I learned from my M.A.T., it was a great year! You know... having those 4 years of teaching experience before doing my M.A.T., also, I think, really helped me to grow as an educator. We did some really exciting units this year. For example, building on some lessons I found in some Adult-ESL texts, I created a 3-week unit titled "Helping Your Family to Buy a Home!" Yes - so, we made "dream homes" out of cardboard boxes and materials. Students learned "Mr. Chiocca's 11 Steps to Buying a Home," and they made YouTube videos and Audio Recordings for the Final Project. The kids learned about mortgages, down payments, PITI - Principal, Interest, Taxes and Insurance; and how to work with real estate agents and brokers. In addition, students learned ...

Doesn't a blog only make sense when others will read it?

Hi, Is anyone reading this...? Really...? (crickets...) You see... I don't mean to sound so lame, but I'm torn. I feel like I'm supposed to contribute to the educational blogosphere, and yet I have three followers. Please... cue giggle (Yes, I want you to smile and giggle). I had these ideal thoughts about what it may be like to blog and learn from others online, and yet - I feel quite unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Yes, there must be 2 billion blogs out there, and everyone is pretty busy with life, so should I continue to blog? Please - somebody leave a comment...! And say, Yes, Mr. Chiocca, please contribute. Education and the future of public education depends on people like you, who care and want our kids to learn as much as they can in each grade level. Thanks for reading! Mr. Chiocca

My first clubhouse room!

I'm officially a moderator on Clubhouse! Yay! Have you gotten on the app?  It's still new, and in development, so it's only available on Apple iPhones, and iPads, etc.  It's still "invite only" and they did this on purpose, but I don't think it was meant to be exclusive, like a private club, rather because they are still in the "Beta" phase of growing, and developing, and didn't want to have millions join too fast, and thus overload the system.  Once you're on it, they you realize the value of it.  It's cool how the conversations in these "rooms" are generally based around a specific niche idea/ industry/ topic/ question.  There are rooms with thousands of listeners, and then there are smaller rooms which allow you to make new friends, and to be "brought up onto the stage," to speak.  It's audio only, and only Twitter and Instagram are linked in your profile, so it seems pretty clean and neat.  I like how there...
